SoWa gains steam despite heat

Courtesy of SoWa Open MarketThe SoWa Open Market continues to hustle through the heat as crowds of Bostonians and tourists alike make their way through hybrid craft fair/farmer's market/antique show/open studio/live music event.

The annual Market has been rollicking every weekend since May, and will continue through October. Even in the ninety degree heat and humidity this weekend, people came from all across the city to see what the market had to offer: from homemade soaps to locally grown corn to fine art photography from regional artists.

One of the most bustling areas of the event was the new SoWa Antiques Market, and not just because it's located in the shade of an old railway building. Antique dealers from across New England offered an abundance of vintage costume jewlery and glass-works, with an attractive smattering of 19th-20th century decorative arts and furniture.

Ask many Boston natives about SoWa, and they'll roll their eyes, claiming the abbreviated “South of Washington St” term is a meaningless invention of those attempting revitalize the area. It appears, though, that SoWa is beginning to hold its own. The galleries at 450 Harrison Ave are firmly established, and new ones seem to pop up every season (e.g. Dennis Duffy's DScale showroom, or Galeria Cubana, one of the few galleries in the country licensed to bring work back from the embargoed nation.) Throw in the upscale restaurants that trickle down Washington Street (Banq, Union, etc), and it appears that SoWa could be transforming into a new, slightly more accessible Newbury Street.  The SoWa Open Market makes this all too apparent by tying all these elements together into one all-encompassing event.

The SoWa Open Market posts its weekly highlights and musical acts in advance at www.SowaSundays.com.  The Market is held between 450-460 Harrison Ave in Boston's South End, and will run every weekend through October 25th.  More information at www.southendopenmarket.com.
