There's a buzzing hub of creativity in Lynn, MA at the LynnArts Building in Central Square. Upon entering the building you may hear a steel drum band practicing on one side of the hallway, an opera singer hitting high notes on the other side, and in between you will see contemporary art exhibitions produced by The Little Gallery Under The Stairs, also known as, TLGUTS. Founded in 2006 this gallery space is directed by Jocelyn Almy-Testa who says of her community-focused gallery, ''My goal is that every person who walks through the door leaves with what ever it is they were looking for, whether it be a work of art, support, a sense of community, entertainment, inspiration, information, education, or a conversation.''
The next exhibition at TLGUTS titled, VOICES: Mothers Who Create II, opens on February 4th and can be viewed through April 10th. This exhibition, which has become an annual event, showcases artwork created by more than twenty artists who are also mothers, grandmothers and maternal figures. Each piece included in the exhibition was created by a woman who balances the pursuit of a career in the arts with motherhood. Almy-Testa notes that the past year has seen an influx of attention in Massachusetts for mothers who are also artists including a screening at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston of Pamela T. Boll's documentary, Who Does She Think She Is, and an exhibition at AXIOM Center for New Media gallery in Jamaica Plain called Mothers Expressing.
There will be a public reception for Mothers Who Create on Saturday, February 6th from 2 - 5pm at The Little Gallery Under the Stairs which is located at LynnArts in downtown Lynn, MA at 25 Exchange Street, directly across from the commuter rail stop. Regular gallery hours are Saturdays from 10am – 6pm. Viewing appointments can be made by contacting Jocelyn Almy-Testa at 781-715-1445.
