East of Eden DVD cover
This weekend at The Belcourt Theatre, East of Eden starring James Dean and Raymond Massey will be playing. You can catch it on Saturday, November 28, at 12 PM or 9:30 PM; Sunday, November 29, at 12 PM or 9:30 PM; or Monday, November 30, at 7 PM. There will also be a post-screening discussion at the Vanderbilt University led by Megan Minarich on Sunday.
The movie was filmed in 1955 and directed by Elia Kazan. It's set in California's Salinas Valley and adapts John Steinbeck's novel. It also stars Julie Harris, Jo Van Fleet, and Burl Ives.
Tired of being compared to his perfect brother, troublemaker Cal (James Dean) tries in vain to please his father (Raymond Massey). The two finally face off when Cal confronts his dad with the truth about his allegedly dead mother."
Elia Kazan directed 21 feature films and won many awards, including three Oscars, five Tonys, and four Golden Globes. He was born in 1909 in Istanbul and began his career in the 1940's, directing the stage version of "A Streetcar Named Desire."
