Friends of Tim Krekel, the noted Louisville musician who died Wednesday, June 24, will celebrate his life Sunday afternoon with a New Orleans-style funeral parade from lower Frankfort Avenue to the Vernon Club on Story Avenue. People are encouraged to gather near Frankfort and Williams Street around 3-3:30 and to bring colorful umbrellas and tambourines.
Krekel's first brush with fame came as lead guitarist for Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band in the mid-1970s. He left for a solo career that never quite hit (he was signed to Capricorn in 1979, as the label was going bankrupt, then put out two albums on Arista in the 1980s). He moved back to his hometown in the 1990s, where he was a mainstay on local stages, in multiple band formats, and released several recordings. Numerous famous artists have hit the charts with Krekel-penned songs, and he is a deeply respected figure in the music industry.
