The WE Artspace in Oakland, just a mere block or so from the MacArthur BART station, is an unassuming place. The space inside, however, is a whole other story. That's the difference, an Eastern Religions college professor once taught me, between place and space.
Last Saturday I visited Tina Dillman and Naaman Rosen, owners and residents of the street level corner unit, to see how their holiday-oriented Stocking Stuffer Show was going. Artwork of various kinds was hanging from the walls, resting on tables, peeking out of nooks and crannies. The wooden doors, propped open, let light shine in on the glossy veneer of resin dipped pieces and a tablescape of bracelets, buttons, and cards.
"There is some great work by up and coming bay area artists and most work is priced under $100 with $200 being the cap." Said Dillman, explaining the ongoing art show happening in conjuction with the weekly craft fair, "The craft fair highlights the work of local artisans ranging from ceramics, to calendars, clothing, prints, jewelery and any thing else you can imagine that is hand made."
The show will run through Dec 20 and will be open from 11-3 on Saturdays and Sundays, with a holiday party from 6-9pm to mark the closing reception. A pot luck and gift exchange will be nicely accompanied by a dj spinning tunes for musical entertainment. To find out more about the gallery or local artists like Chris Vogel, Hilary Williams, and Chris Treggiari please check out the WE Artspace website.
