It has been compared to everything from London's famous Portobello Market to Portland, Oregon's Saturday Market but most people agree that SoWa, now in it's seventh season, has become a uniquely Boston event. Every Sunday, from May through October, The SoWa Open Market features an always changing array of handmade items ranging from artwork to home goods and baked goods to jewelry. Located in the heart of the SoWa art district the market draws a talented crowd of bakers, artists, crafters, and artisans.

The key to the markets success lies in the fact that it operates like a juried art show. This guarantees shoppers that the items up for sale are of the highest level of creativity and quality. The market also makes it a point to avoid accepting vendors who sell too many similar items. This careful attention to detail means that every Sunday shoppers will see the widest possible variety of art and crafts.

Not all of SoWa's vendors are Bostonians though. You'll find many artists and craftspeople who make the trip to Boston for the day from Rhode Island and Maine. This year in particular a large percentage of the SoWa artists hail from New Hampshire. Among them are Rambunktious Glass from Dover, New Hampshire and Manchester's own Becky OH! line of custom handbags.

As much fun as SoWa is for shoppers and art lovers it also offers an indispensable opportunity to artists and craftspeople to get their work seen by an appreciative crowd, and possibly make some money doing what they love. SoWa is still accepting applications from artists, musicians, designers, farmers, and non-profit groups. The market itself is located at 460 Harrison Avenue in Boston, MA. It is open every Sunday until the end of October from 10 to 4. There is free parking and no admission fee to come and experience SoWa for yourself.
