Denishé Hats © Denise Shea
Denise Shea creates hats in her studio at ArtsSpace in Maynard, MA under the name of Denishé Hats.
In her artist's statement, she describes her work:
""Whimsical, Dr. Seuss-like, elegant, flower-like, fun and flattering" - all of these are terms I've heard people use to describe my hats. From felt, straw, and fabric I make eye-catching one-of-a-kind hats that make people smile."
"For me, a hat is an immediate expression of self. With that same passion for expression I make my hats. I want to challenge people's concept of what a hat should be. I like to ask myself "What if...?" and "Why not...?" In my millinery I shape different personalities for each creation, maybe quirky, maybe functional, maybe just lovely - always fun. Each of my hats is one-of-a-kind created with the hope that - like Cinderella and the glass slipper - I will be able to find its intended owner.
In my studio there are six words I can't hear: "I don't look good in hats." To that I say, "Don't give up, you just haven't found your hat!""
Denise's work can be seen in her studio, on her website, and sometimes at Paradise City, Craftboston, and the DeCordova Museum's Art in the Park. Check her website or blog for more information.
