Zumba is a type of cardio workout that uses Latin music and dance to help burn off fat in a non traditional aerobics class. Zumba cardio workout was created in Cali Columbia by an aerobics instructor, Beto Perez. He came up with the idea by accident. He got to a class he was teaching and realized he had forgotten his aerobics tapes. He had to use his personal music he had with him in his bag. The Zumba cardio workout class was an instant hit.
Beto brought the idea to Miami in 1999. He and 2 partners trademarked the name Zumba. There plan was to expand worldwide. In 2002 they marketed a DVD of the classes in the U.S., that sold several hundred thousand copies.
They have since gone worldwide with their marketing and sold a second and third set of workout DVD's. They now have classes all over the world, taught by over 10,000 trained instructors. People like the Zumba cardio workout classes so much because they promote it as a party where you can have fun, learn Latin dance, tone your muscles, burn off fat, release tension, and get a great workout.
The popularity of the classes has exploded over the past year. There are hundreds of zumba cardio workout classes around the Twin cities. You can find a class near you here. In a typical class, you can burn 500 to 800 calories, depending on how intense you do the dances. The video below will give you an idea of what a typical class would be like.
