Zorpia-A Threat?

Tired of Facebook? Then you might try Zorpia, another social networking site that was established in 2003. A lot of people would say, “Don’t bother joining this network!” There are an awful lot of comments going around that concern this social network and many of them are negative. But, to be fair I must say there are also some positive attributes of this network that according to Google, promises “A World of New Friends”. Even though the negative attributes far outnumber the positive ones, Zorpia can boast of having more than 26 million members and if you know how to protect your identity on the internet this social network poses no threat.

A preliminary search for Zorpia will turn up a bunch of negative comments. Many think that while it poorly masquerades as a place to meet new friends, it is just for casual hook-ups (and I mean this in the sexual way). This being said, you do have to be eighteen years old to join (hint, hint) and although a substantial effort is made to keep inappropriate material off of the network, which I will discuss a little later, you can still find inappropriate pictures and such. Also spam or spamming is a big issue with Zorpia. It has been reported that within just one hour of joining you will receive three unsolicited spam (junk) e-mails. Scamming (also known as a confidence trick, this trick attempts to defraud someone after having gained his or her confidence) and phishing (attempting to collect all kinds of information by pretending to be a respectable entity) are other issues with this network. Plus you need to aware that the private messages you compose on the network may be sent out, at least in part, to non-Zorpia users who are asked to join to view the full message. And some of these messages cannot be traced back to any real user.

However despite all these negative attributes, Zorpia holds a highly coveted Chinese ICP (Internet Content Provider) license. Remember China is very big on censorship and the license, which is highly difficult to obtain, is supposed to assure that any inappropriate material that squeaks past the filters is reported in a timely fashion, so that the problem can be fixed. Of course the number one positive attribute is that it is totally free. This network is free to join, it is free to post photos, it is free to post journals, and to make new friends. Furthermore, there is an impressive music section.

Regardless of all the negative and positive attributes Zorpia possesses, what it all boils down to is how diligent you are about protecting yourself on the web. If you know how to protect your identity and stay on top of it, joining Zorpia poses no threat.
