Illinois head coach Ron Zook announced on his Monday morning radio show that junior quarterback Eddie McGee will start against Michigan State on Saturday in place of senior Juice Williams.
Citing a need for a spark on a largely unproductive offense, Zook will be handing the reins over to career-long backup McGee instead of Williams, Illinois' all-time leader in total-offense - an interesting decision that surprises many.
Experts like Daily Illini football columnist Pete Zervakis and ESPN.com's Big Ten blogger Adam Rittenberg were confident that talk of Williams' benching wouldn't lead to anything. It is strange to think that at this time last year, Williams was viewed as a realistic possibility for the Heisman Trophy. The four-year starter set three stadium records in total yardage last season.
With a 1-4 start that has been anything but pretty, the Illini will be scrambling to get out of the cellar of the Big Ten and salvage what is left of their season.
