Denver’s 16th Street Mall was transformed in to a scene straight out of AMC’s hit show The Walking Dead on Sat Oct 19, 2013. People of all ages participated in the annual Denver Zombie Crawl. Hundreds of zombies of all ages and shapes dragged their undead bodies up and down the famous 16th Street Mall on Saturday. Tourists and passers-by were no doubt disturbed by the splattering of blood on the sidewalks and drinking fountains. Zombies came in all types of make-up and costumes including undead superheroes, and an entire family dressed up as zombie Bob’s Big Boy restaurant servers. There were street performers on site including a wonderful jazz band sponsored by ARC Thrift Stores and a musician keeping rhythm on buckets and cymbals. Even the servers at the restaurants along the 16th street mall were in the spirit with make-up and costumes as they refueled tired zombies and hunters with food.
The crossing guards sporting their Zombie Crossing signs kept both the alive and undead safe. Bloody good fun often got out of hand as the zombie hunters chased down crawling participants with squirt guns and screams. There was even a costume contest with prizes, the Organ Trail Race, and a Thriller flash mob. The festivities continued on in to the night with Zombie Crawl parties at Casselman's and Meadowlark. The event was free to everyone yet they did ask that participants bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the Food Bank of the Rockies.
