Zombie Preparedness Day in Topeka

Imagine what it would take to prepare your family for a disaster such as thousands of flesh eating zombies invading the streets and feeding on the innocent people of the town. Will your family be able to survive several days in hiding if zombies were to attack? Are you truly ready for such an event?

“October’s Zombie Preparedness Month, is part of a national campaign to encourage the public to take an all-hazards approach to preparing themselves for tornadoes, floods, fires, hurricanes, terrorist attacks, and other disasters - including zombie attacks,” according to a press release statement made by the Kansas Division of Emergency Management (KDEM) in late September, 2011.

In honor of Halloween and this campaign, the KDEM has designated October 29, 2011 as “Zombie Preparedness Day” and will be hosting a safety fair in downtown Topeka in order to raise awareness about public safety during disasters.

“If you are prepared for a zombie attack, you are prepared for anything,” said Devan Tucking-Strickler, KDEM Human Services officer. “No matter what the disaster, the preparations are the same: make an emergency kit that will allow you and your family to survive for a minimum of three days until help can arrive, devise a home emergency plan and practice it so that everyone knows what to do if a disaster strikes - even zombies.”

Do not be afraid to dress in your favorite costume and head downtown to learn more about how to protect yourself and your family. Whether a natural disaster, zombies in the streets, or aliens from another planet, one can never be too prepared.

Even if you think you have it covered and you are ready for any possible disaster, come on out and join in the fun, brush up on those old skills.

This safety fair is free to attend and sure to be fun for all ages so bring your children. There will be a Zombie Walk, safety booths and displays, Zombie Dancing, and more. You may even want to bring along a camera so you can capture some fun family memories to share while hiding away from the invasion of the zombies.
