Tallgrass Brewing’s seasonal lineup includes “Zombie Monkey Post Apocalyptic Porter”. Are they just trying to cash in with the zombie craze of today or is there actually a good beer in there? Fortunately we don’t have to wait till the end of the world to find out.

The can is an eye grabber and the marketing doesn’t stop with the name as the can has “Tactical grip to prevent slippage while fleeing” meaning rougher areas on the can to back that up. Sporting a blue wild eyed monkey on the can the folks at Tallgrass Brewing are no doubt creative, but what about the beer.

This beer pours extremely dark and opaque with a thickness to it. A nice thick creamy tan head tops the beer like the crazed monkey frothing at the mouth. The aroma is a pleasant rich sweet alcohol countered by the ravenous bite of bitter chocolate. The taste is that of roasty dark espresso. It is rich and creamy with a balanced sweetness. A nice chewy mouth feel, like blood soaked grey-matter.

As described by Tallgrass:

“Zombie Monkie is a dark, rich porter, carefully brewed for the post-apocalyptic world to come. Crafted with lots of roasty dark chocolate and specialty malts, then inoculated with enough hops to add a floral/citrus character in the finish. It's hardy, complex, and interesting, because you might be drinking it for a long time. Zombie Monkie...”

All puns aside this beer is hearty, full flavored, and would pair well with a rich red meat or a good cigar. A must try for anyone who loves a nice hearty porter. Having the boldness to stand up to and compliment both with a 6.2% ABV. As with all Tallgrass beers Zombie Monkey comes in a pint can.
