According to a report Tuesday on InvictaFC.com, Zoila Gurgel, flyweight superstar, has agreed to a multi-fight deal with Invicta Fighting Championships. Gurgel, who resides in Cincinnati, Ohio, is slated to make her debut at the next Invicta FC scheduled for some time in April.
At that event, she will face submission specialist Jennifer Maia (6-2) of Brazil.
“We are thrilled to welcome Zoila, an established superstar in the sport, to the Invicta FC roster and are looking forward to seeing her compete in our rapidly growing flyweight division,” said Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp. “Zoila has turned in a number of thrilling performances while rising through the ranks of fighters over the last few years, and we are confident that she will help raise the bar of competition even further in the Invicta FC cage.”
Zoila Gurgel is the sister of current Invicta Fighter, Stephanie Frausto, as well as the wife of former UFC and Strikeforce fighter Jorge Gurgel. Her career record stands at an impressive 12-2 and includes a 6-1 run insider Bellator in which she captured the 115-pound women's title with a victory over Megumi Fujii, snapping her 22 fight unbeaten streak. In her last fight, she lost her title to Jessica Eye via submission.
In another notable fight, Zoila Gurgel handed Jessica Penne the lone loss of her career at Bellator 25, winning that contest by unanimous decision. Penne would later move to Invicta FC, becoming that organizations very first champion at atomweight (105 pounds).
“I am excited to join Invicta FC, where the best women fighters in the world are competing,” said Frausto Gurgel, who will be joining her 22-year-old sister in the promotion. “Invicta FC has become more than just a promotion – it’s evolved into an entire movement for women’s MMA, and I’m proud to represent that movement while continuing to fight and beat the best opponents out there.”
