South Florida's newest professional theatre company Zoetic Stage will kick off a summer of fundraising events on July 26th at 7pm with an evening of the best of Michael McKeever's short plays entitled McKeever's Briefs. Presented as a staged reading, the collection of comedic short plays will be directed by Zoetic Stage Producing Artistic Director, Stuart Meltzer.

Michael McKeever is South Florida's most produced and prolific playwright. His plays have premiered in many of South Florida's top theatres and produced throughout the United States and Europe.

I got a chance to catch up with Michael to find out more about the McKeever Briefs, Zoetic Stage and his upcoming plans in South Florida.

Hi Michael. How amazing it is to chat with one of South Florida's most successful playwrights who, might I add, is also internationally renowned! So, what or who influenced you to step into the delightful world of playwriting?

MCKEEVER
I've always wanted to be a storyteller. Since I was a kid. I love the whole process of creating characters and bringing them to life. My favorite writers include Tennessee Williams, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Noel Coward and Michael Cunningham. As a young man, I would get completely lost in their words. I thought what a great gig: Transporting people to other worlds by imagination and storytelling.

What can the audience expect from the upcoming evening of McKeever's Briefs at The Caldwell Theatre?

MCKEEVER
A lot of fun! The seven short plays that we're reading have played around the world at various ten-minute play festivals to great success. They are all comic pieces. All irreverent, funny little plays, mostly about pop culture. They tackle everything from Grant Wood's American Gothic to Stephen Sondheim to The Wizard of Oz.

In true McKeever style, you have a who's who of talented actors reading your plays. Talk to me about it.

MCKEEVER
I'm thrilled that we have the cast that we have. Not only are they all amazing actors, but also some of my closest friends. I've worked with every one of them many, many, many times in the past. They make me laugh offstage as much as on. As a writer, I steal from their everyday conversation all the time.

How did you become affiliated with the newly formed theatre company, Zoetic Stage?

MCKEEVER
I'm proud to say I was there from day one. My partner Stuart Meltzer has been looking to form a quality theatre company for the past year or so. It started with the two of us sitting around imaging what we considered to be the ideal theatre company. A few weeks later we proposed the idea to a great local playwright Chris-Demos Brown and his wife Stephanie and they loved the concept. One thing led to another and here we are.

Your adoring fans would love to know... do you have any future scripts up your sleeve?

MCKEEVER
I love that I have adoring fans. I adore them right back. The script I'm currently working on will be the inaugural production at Zoetic Stage in December of this year. It's called South Beach Babylon. It's a dark, sexy, funny, sexy, contemporary, sexy look at what it takes to create art in a place like South Beach.
