As most readers already know, Queens native Zoe Saldana appeared as pirate Anamaria in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003 alongside Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. Given that there is a certain amount of fandom crossover between Pirates and Star Trek, many people were glad to see the ruthless pirate return as the reserved and brilliant Uhura, now on board the U.S.S. Enterprise.
Saldana is of Puerto Rican and Dominican descent and spent some of her childhood in the Dominican Republic, where she studied ballet. She has been featured on the covers of Latina, Urban Latino, Trace, Actual and other magazines. Andy Williamson, Celebrity Profile Examiner, wrote a detailed story on Saldana in March, which you should check out if you missed it.
Saldana's dance experience contributed to her landing her first major film role, as Eva in Center Stage (2000); she also appeared in Drumline (2002), The Terminal (2004) (in which she plays a Star Trek fan), Guess Who (2005) and After Sex (2007). After Sex, a set of eight vignettes of couples in various relationship stages who have just had sex, is not well known in America, but was a favorite at the Cannes Film Festival; Saldana's performance was highly regarded. In an interview with Brad Balfour on blackfilm.com, Saldana discussed how the indie film Haven (2006), which also featured Orlando Bloom, allowed her to play a character from a traditional Caribbean culture. Saldana has a role in James Cameron's Avatar, a 3-D science fiction film scheduled for release in December.
Whatever other feature roles the future holds for Saldana, fans can expect Nyota Uhura's return in at least two more Star Trek films.
