On Monday, ABC News reported that George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer acquitted in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, recently helped rescue a family trapped in an overturned vehicle. Predictably, some Martin supporters claimed the accident was staged to improve his image in the media.
"i'm sorry but that George Zimmerman car accident was staged (sic)," one person tweeted.
"I think so too. Next he will save a kitten from burning house (sic)," one person tweeted in response.
"Is it just me or does it seemed a lil bit staged that Zimmerman rescued someone from a car accident? Timing seems to be funny (sic)," added "Champ Sinatra."
"Zimmerman didn't witness the accident, but he responded before the police, or paramedics?!? STAGED!! It's a d**n shame what they are doing," one person said without specifying who "they" are.
"Dis n***a Zimmerman staged a accident (sic)," declared one Twitter user.
A search of Twitter revealed hundreds of tweets suggested Zimmerman staged the accident.
According to ABC News, Zimmerman was one of two people who came to the aid of the family trapped inside a blue Ford Explorer SUV that had rolled over after traveling off the highway in Sanford, Fla. Thursday afternoon.
Police said the crash occurred at the intersection of I-4 and route Route 46, less than a mile from where Zimmerman shot Martin last year.
No injuries were reported and Zimmerman, who did not witness the accident, left after speaking with a deputy.
Twitchy said a number of people issued sarcastic tweets predicting how MSNBC would cover the incident.
"Once again Zimmerman takes the law into his own hands. Reckless to go into overturned truck," tweeted Ben Howe.
"What was it that provoked Zimmerman to 'rescue' this man from the overturned truck? Could it be that the driver was white?" he added.
"Al Sharpton confused about how to handle Zimmerman rescuing people from a...blue car. Not clear cut black and white," Katie Pavlich tweeted.
Zimmerman's brother Robert weighed in on the incident.
"George saw a need, he acted. Our parents taught us to help, never to boast. Humility is George's finest trait," he tweeted.
