Zillow Digs reports kitchen remodeling tops home design trend for 2014

Last week, Zillow Digs announced in its Home Design Trend Report for 2014 that kitchen remodeling tops the trends for 2014. According to feedback from homeowners and Zillow Digs Board of Designers, kitchens featuring black countertops, open shelves or glass-front cabinets and darker paint tones will be popular next year with kitchens topping the list of spaces homeowners plan to remodel in the coming year.
The top kitchen trends identified for 2014 are:
Black Counters: Black kitchen counters will be all the rage next year, with homeowners looking to add sophistication to their kitchen. Popular materials to achieve this look will include black granite and quartz, tasteful and elegant materials that create dramatic results. Black counters will be complemented with lighter countertops such as gray.
Open Shelves and Glass-front Cabinets: Displaying kitchen wares is a growing trend among all kitchen types from contemporary to traditional farmhouse kitchens. Displaying a mélange of antique cookware or different types of cutting boards can have an artful effect and be a conversation piece. With the kitchen becoming the hub of the home and the growing interest in specialty foods, creating a display of gourmet products has eye-catching appeal.
Darker Paint Tones: Homeowners identified black, deep brown, dark red and copper tones as some of the most popular paint colors on Zillow Digs. Since dark colors may make a space feel smaller, designers recommend painting just one wall a deep shade, or consider painting the ceiling or floor. Also, adding a pop of a darker tone can be kicked up a notch by having one or more appliances such as the range in red or black.
