Following on from the news of Zhala being the first musical artist to sign to Robyn's Konichiwa Records, this new pop alliance performed Zhala's debut EP title track 'Prophet' live on television last night. The performance formed part of the Swedish Grammis, the award ceremony chose to celebrate in the theme of classic music videos, with live acts re-enacting the likes of OK Go's 'Here It Goes Again' almost shot by shot.
Robyn + Zhala
Step forward Zhala and Robyn, who performed Zhala's 'religious rave' debut in the style of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', true to it's doomy college aesthetic, cheerleaders and all.
This haunting track heads up Zhala's debut EP, co-produced with Mathias Oldén deep in the heart of Malmö last winter. The EP, also including the Robyn Grammi's version is available to buy from iTunes and Spotify as of yesterday.

Robyn announced Zhala's signing via her Twitter the other day and had the following to say about Zhala joining Konichiwa: "Zhala makes the most interesting music that takes you on a ride with each song. It´s so broad and has so much integrity at the same time. When Zhala sings the heavens open and the stars come down to hover over my head and I feel like anything is possible. I´m so happy to be a part of taking her music to a new audience." Zhala responded by saying "It feels right to release my music on Konichiwa Records. This EP, 'Prophet' is religious rave music. With Konichiwa, there's a deep understanding and vast knowledge of music and the industry since Robyn is an artist herself. I really like that."
Alongside 'Prophet' with it's intense Eastern synth lines and the mesmerising layered pop of 'Efter Livet', the debut EP will also feature the official release of 'Slippin' Around', a darkly epic track that provided the very first glimpse of Zhala in 2012. Its equally striking video prompted much praise from the likes of My Old Kentucky Blog, Discobelle and The Line of Best Fit, sounding the clarion that there was a new and unusual popstar about to emerge.
Zhala’s haunting and evocative melodies are packed with a serious punch, full of thought-provoking lyrics and undeniable hooks. Using the Swedish capital as her base but with the mindset of a modern day transnational, Zhala’s music is futuristic, labeled by the artist herself as “cosmic pop.”
Born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden, Zhala (Rifat) became very involved in the local art and club scene during her late teens. She further developed her talents as an artist through dance, singing and her live shows; a path which eventually led to her being signed to Konichiwa Records. While recording the music for her first release, Zhala continued to tour - playing several festivals (Bestival, Isle of Wight, Way Out West), a unique performance at the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit at Moderna Museet, and most recently, an opening slot for Robyn in London, Berlin and Stockholm.
