Zenyatta's birthday brings a baby boy (Photos)

Zenyatta welcomed her second offspring into the world on her own ninth birthday, which happened to be April Fool’s Day. But this was no prank, despite earlier rumors filling social networking sites, which seemed to call for the blessed event a bit early.

Team Zenyatta’s Facebook page left no room for doubt about the Thoroughbred colt’s birth, even on April Fool’s Day, posting this early morning quip on April 2:

No fooling, it's a boy!

Arriving at 11:47 p.m. on April 1, the 145-pound colt was up and nursing within minutes at Lanes End Farm, in Versailles, Kentucky. Owners Jerry and Ann Moss were on hand for the much-anticipated event, announcing the news on Team’s Zenyatta’s Twitter:

It's a boy! Born April 1, 11:47 pm. Happy birthday Zenyatta! #zenyatta

On Zenyatta’s official blog, Ann Moss posted this comment:

Zenyatta has always been one for special occasions. In true form, she foaled just before midnight on her 9th birthday, after a day of celebration.

The strapping lad, likely to remain a chestnut, was sired by Tapit (Pulpit - Tap Your Heels, by Unbridled). Spunky and sweet, the youngster sports a white blaze, much like his mother’s.

“Both are doing so very well, and it’s a joy to see how much Zenyatta loves being a mom.,” Moss added on Zenyatta’s blog page.

Popularly tagged “The Queen of Racing,” Zenyatta (Street Cry x Vertigineux by Kris S.) is now a mother for the second time. In March 2012, the supermare and 2010 Eclipse Horse of the Year fondly known as “Zenny” produced a bay colt by Bernardini.

The long-legged yearling, weaned last August, is known around the barn at Kentucky’s Lanes End as Z12 (for Zenyatta 2012 colt). The newest addition has already been dubbed Z13.
