Teen sensation Zendaya won the BMI Social Star award at last night’s BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards held at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles. Selected by fans voting via Twitter, the award salutes the BMI R&B/hip-hop songwriter who has best demonstrated the power of social media to showcase their songwriting talents. The young singer and actress has been inspiring fans for years with her many projects, including Disney’s “Shake It Up” with good friend Bella Thorne and her social message that inspires fans all around the world.
“I just want to say ‘Thank You so much. I’m just doing what I love to do,” Zendaya said on stage. “I appreciate … knowing that there’s people out there who love what I do and want me to succeed, means a lot to me because it’s not easy being young and doing this so. Thank you so much. It’s a pleasure being here among greatness. I honor every single person in here and every single person in this category.”
August Alsina, Sage the Gemini and Rich Homie Quan were also nominated in the category.
Zendaya, who wore Rubin Singer 2014 designer outfit, was also honored with a fashion and style award earlier this month at The Teen Choice Awards and continues her charity endeavors with her 18th birthday project, “feed One.” The Disney Channel star will also be performing at the LA County Fairplex in Pomona on August 29th.
The BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards celebrated the songwriters, producers and publishers of the most-performed R&B/hip-hop songs of the previous year.
Superstar Christopher “Ludacris” Bridges was honored with the BMI President’s Award. Bridges, who stars in the “Fast and Furious” movie franchise and is an expert on ABC’s “Rising Star,” also performed a medley of his hits including “Fantasy,” “How Low Can You Go” and “Yeah.”
