Zedd, the platinum selling artist most commonly known for his mainstream hits, “Clarity,” “Stay the Night,” and “Spectrum,” kicked off RPM’s string of shows on Friday, December 27 with an eminent opening night as Pier 94 was transformed into a gargantuan EDM arena for thousands of revelers and ravers.

Zedd proved that he not only can deliver in the studio as a producer, but that he can deliver on stage as a performer as well. The artist emerged surrounded by an orb of lights and immediately enraptured the crowd, sending them into a joyous frenzy as he performed prominent hits from the EDM market including Martin Garrix’s “Animals” and Dada Life’s remix of Major Lazer’s “Bubble Butt."

The artist displayed his dexterity as a performer as he manipulated the energy of the crowd by pairing soothing vocals next to heavy beat drops, making the contrast feel that much more magnanimous. As LED panels on every side of the venue, including the ceiling, glared to each pulsating drop, a little holiday magic of glitter rained onto the revelers adding a majestic aura to the evening.

Zedd performed numerous of his personal mainstream hits including, “Clarity,” and his remix of Empire of the Sun’s “Alive.” Diverging from what many popular EDM artists deliver, the artist played these songs in their entirety without remixing them, turning them into mash-ups or moving onto completely different tracks. This was a subtle detail that created a unified environment amongst the crowd as thousands upon thousands chanted to these songs in unison making the experience that much more memorable.

Although Zedd may be most commonly known for his mainstream sound, he demonstrated his depth as an artist by featuring a range of trap and hip-songs songs amidst his performance, which the audience immediately embraced. The artist even featured a trap remix of “Clarity,” which demonstrated his versatility as a DJ with unpredictable capabilities. For an artist that is exceptionally young and capable of wearing numerous hats as a performer and a producer, it appears that Zedd has the potential of holding solid-ground at the forefront of the music industry for years to come.

Zedd’s performance was one of four of RPM’s events set to be held over New Year’s Eve weekend. Other headlining performers include: Hardwell, Major Lazer, and Alesso. For more information on these events, please visit RPM’s official web-page.
