One Direction fans all over the Internet are speculating about how Zayn Malik got an injury to his right hand, which paparazzi photos showed as bandaged, cut and bruised during One Direction's tour rehearsals in London on January 30, 2013. Most people are guessing that the injury was caused because Malik, 20, punched something hard in anger.
In a One Direction interview that aired on ITV1's "Daybreak" on January 31, 2013, Malik did not discuss his hand injury, and he has not made any public comments about it. During the "Daybreak" interview, he was also shown moving his bare hands around and putting his right hand up to his face a few times without any signs of discomfort, which dispels the false rumors that he broke his right hand. (And really, if he did break his hand, it would be in a cast, not a bandage.)
However, there seems to be reason for all of Malik's normal hand movements during the "Daybreak" interview, because the Daily Mirror reports that the "Daybreak" interview was prerecorded before Malik's cheating scandal broke and before he injured his hand, so that would explain why his bare hands in the interview show no signs of injury and why anything he says in the interview should not be taken as an interpretation of how he's reacting to the cheating scandal. A few people in the gossip media have inaccurately taken Malik's quotes from the interview and reported that these quotes are how he's reacting to the scandal, when in fact he has not publicly commented yet about the scandal.
It's safe to say that this is not a happy time in Malik's life right now. As previously reported, he's in the midst of a cheating scandal in which he's been accused of being unfaithful to Little Mix's Perrie Edwards, 19, who began dating Malik in April 2012. A 21-year-old Australian waitress named Courtney "CJ" Webb told British tabloid The Sun in an exclusive interview that she and Malik had sex at his London home on January 23, 2013.
Malik and Edwards are former "X Factor" U.K. contestants. One Direction came in third place on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2010. Little Mix was the winner of "The X Factor" U.K. in 2011. Before the cheating scandal, Malik and Edwards said in interviews that their relationship was serious, that they were in love, and that they were very happy together.
Webb told The Sun that before she and Malik had sex, he lied to her by saying that he didn't have a girlfriend, but she found out the truth after she saw some of Edwards' belongings in Malik's home and he eventually admitted to her that he had a girlfriend who was away on tour. Webb, who spent the night with Malik, took photos of Malik sleeping in bed as proof of their alleged one-night stand. The Sun published the photos, which are also all over the Internet.
Little Mix's 2013 U.K. tour launched on January 24. After the scandal broke when The Sun published the Webb interview on January 27, 2013, Malik went to Nottingham, England, where Little Mix performed at a concert on January 28, 2013. Several tabloids reported that Malik and Edwards had a tense meeting that did not end well. Even though Malik was at the same Nottingham hotel as Little Mix, several sources told the media that he did not spend the night in the same hotel room as Edwards, he was not invited to Little Mix's concert in Nottingham, and he's been banished from the Little Mix tour.
It all sounds like a breakup, but Malik, Edwards aren't publicly commenting yet about the status of their relationship. Their publicists aren't commenting either, and insiders say that the publicists are telling the media outlets that are doing upcoming interviews with One Direction or Little Mix that the Malik/Edwards relationship is an off-limits topic. We'll see how long the "deliberate silence" on this topic will last.
Malik has usually been quick to publicly deny false rumors about himself, but so far he has been publicly silent about what Webb has told the media about their alleged one-night stand.
Ironically, in One Direction's hit song "Live While We're Young" (which was released in 2012 and is about casual sexual hookups), Malik sings the line, "And if we get together, yeah get together, don't let the pictures leave your phone." Now, every time he sings those words in concert, they're going to have another meaning because of Webb's photos and the cheating scandal.
One Direction's 2013 world tour begins February 22 in London. The tour has about eight months of concert dates scheduled and will go to Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand and Asia.
February 2, 2013 update: Malik, who is an avid skateboarder, told The Sun what caused his hand injury: “We were in the studio and decided to do a bit of skating. But the floor in here isn’t the best. I fell off and the board went over my hand. It hurt so much. I was trying to do a trick and went flying. It was a bit stupid.” He also told The Sun that his relationship with Edwards is "just fine."
