Zang Toi Spring 2014 Collection, titled Ballet Babe, was as you imagined, inspired by ballet, ballerinas and as the French say danseur. Well known ballet dancer Cory Stearns opened the show with a brief but beautiful ballet, setting the theme of mixing classical ballet and fashion.
The designer created a ballet theme collection, where women’s and men’s looks ranged from delicate cashmere pantsuits to red-carpet gowns in spring blues and blacks. Short skirts with knee-high looks and full-skirted gowns seemed to float on their own, with delicate ruffles and trains trailing in the back.
Keeping the makeup minimal and hair pulled back in wavy ballerina buns, models showed off Zang’s delicate silhouettes and embroidery. Considering that this was a spring/summer collection, it was a little confusing seeing fall coats for men, and wintry daytime cashmere, silk dresses and suits for women accessorized with scarves.
Toi played with dark shades of navy and black and pastel blues and pinks. Capes, long gowns, and billowing trains seemed to reoccur throughout the show, and the models demonstrated the movement in the garments by dramatically posing. Expect to see lots of soft shades of blues this spring, as Zang Toi presented the “it” color as well. Pale blue hues on organzas and tulles complemented heaviness of black and navy silks in the collection.
The last several looks were elegant gowns with beautiful details such as floral appliqué and tulle lining. Toi let the colors pop in some of the most successful pieces including a matching bubble-gum pink cashmere dress coat ensemble and a ballet pink full skirted ballerina dress with spring blossoms.
Some of the pieces were underwhelming including the simple trench jackets, plain suit sets, and other work attire. The beaded platinum ballet bow detailing on a number of gowns felt like child's play.
All in all, Zang Toi’s spring 2014 presentation was a pretty collection full of charming details and well-constructed garments.
