Flipnotics, a funky coffeehouse on Barton Springs Road in South Austin, has been named one of the country’s 10 coolest independent coffee shops by Zagat. The Zagat list was featured on The Huffington Post website.
Zagat (owned by Google) praised Flipnotics as a “quirky café” that has “served the needs of musicians and artists with cups of steaming Fair Trade organic coffee and by hosting live bands.”
“Also,” the Zagat reviewer wrote, “while the shop remains laid back, that doesn’t mean the baristas are lazy; in fact, the coffee mavens here make some of the best lattes and cappuccinos out West.”
Flipnotics opened in 1992. Aside from its coffee, local food and live music, Flipnotics is known for its tiered outdoor decks surrounded by trees.
On Yelp.com, which features user-generated reviews, Flipnotics earns an overall rating of four out of five stars.
In a five-star review posted in November, one visitor rated Flipnotics among his favorite coffee shops in Austin. “The coffee is great, as is their hibiscus tea. They get breakfast tacos delivered in the mornings and have other great snacks throughout the day,” the reviewer wrote.
A three-star Yelp review posted in March made this observation of Flipnotics: “I’ve been here a handful of times now. The coffee is decent, and the service is pretty down to earth. I do wish there was more indoor seating, because when it’s 90 something degrees out it can be a real pain to sit outside. Ahhh, what can you do?”
Other independent coffee shops hailed by Zagat are in Asheville, N.C.; Brooklyn, N.Y.; Chicago; Dayton, Ohio; Denver; Portland, Maine; Portland, Ore.; Seattle; and San Francisco.
