Around 9am today, Man of Steel director Zack Snyder tweeted, "I shot this with my @Leica_Camera M Monochrom. #Batman #Batmobile #Gotham." What he shot was a photo of actor Ben Affleck in the new Batman costume.
The image is dark and grey, so there's little to speak of in terms of the suit's colors. With an ominous bat vehicle in the background (I can only assume is the Batmobile, based on the hashtag), Affleck is posed, brooding, in a costume reminiscent of Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns. This is not surprising given three facts:
1. The project was announced at last years San Diego Comic Con with a reading from DKR.
2. Kevin Smith mentioned (after getting a first peak at the costume last year) that this was the costume he and other fans had been waiting to see for years.
3. Affleck's age, making him an older Batman, like the one in DKR.
It's an interesting look, and seems to align with the Superman costume from Man of Steel. As for what they borrow from DKR, I'm hoping the similarities end here.
One of the major moments in the graphic novel is the showdown between Batman and Superman. What makes that particular conflict work is the decades long relationship these characters have. The conflict in the new film needs to have much different motivation, since the men are strangers to each other in this universe.
Continuing to reserve judgement until I see the final product.
