Zachary Quinto Part I: He is not Spock...well, not just Spock

Zachary Quinto as Spock

Star Trek was Zachary Quinto's feature film debut, and while his resemblance to a young Leonard Nimoy doesn't hurt anything, his portrayal of young Spock is what matters. He emerges with a major feature film credit and a professional triumph, having delivered a critically-acclaimed performance. That gift of Star Trek to actors, permanent involvement in a cultural phenomenon with a large and enthusiastic fandom, will follow Quinto throughout his career. It was touching to read about his concern that his formidable eyebrows grow back properly after having to lose them for the Spock makeup; naturally the eyebrows are back to their original gorgeousness, but as Leonard Nimoy warned him, life will never be the same after Spock.

But just as there is more to Spock than ears and eyebrows, there is more to Quinto than Spock. He was familiar to television audiences as computer expert Adam Kaufman in Fox's 24, and later as Sylar in Heroes on NBC. He also appeared recently in director Coley Sohn's Boutonniere, a dark comedy about a teenage girl enduring prom-night preparations and an interfering mother; the ten-minute short was shown at Sundance and at the Milan Film Festival. Last year, with friends Corey Moosa and Neal Dodson, Quinto formed media production company Before The Door Pictures, which will develop film, television, web, and graphic novel projects. The company takes its name from an acting exercise at Carnegie Mellon that all first-year drama students must complete.

An update on Quinto's reputed trouble with the Vulcan hand gesture: while it was widely reported that glue was necessary on the set, an article by Rob Owen in Carnegie Mellon Today (Quinto is an alum) reveals he used rubber bands to practice!

Happy Birthday to John Billingsley, who played Dr. Phlox on Star Trek: Enterprise (my favorite character in my favorite series!). Billingsley also appeared in 24 this year as Michael Latham.

oh thanks for stopping that nonsense about the glued vulcan salute! He is left handed, that's the reason why he had some trouble doing it with the right hand and practiced for months to do it properly. He stated this in many interview too!
