Zac Blair update: Ogden golfer moves into contention at Utah Championship

While Lehi resident Tony Finau flirts with a potential spot on the PGA Tour, there is another golfer from Utah that people should start paying attention to. Ogden resident Zac Blair already played with his father at the U.S. Open earlier this year--but now he’s moved into contention at the Utah Championship.

On Saturday, July 12, Blair continued playing steady golf like he did on Friday, July 11. In those two days alone Blair has moved up 15 places on the leader board at the Willow Creek Country Club and into a tie for ninth place with a third round 66 score.

Because Blair’s scores have improved by one stroke each round throughout this tournament, he should also be considered a threat to continue to move up further on the leader board going into the final round Sunday at this Webcom Tour stop.

Keep in mind Finau is still sitting in a tie for sixth place--and should just about sew up his PGA Tour Q-card with a top 5 finish at this tournament. But Blair is the one making waves in Sandy, Utah this weekend--primarily because he has played so well the past two days.

In fact, if not for a bogey on the 18th hole Saturday--the same hole that got Finau on Friday--Blair might have even crept higher. He shot seven birdies in round three Saturday, four on his first five holes on the front nine.

Blair shot six birdies Friday--but he also double bogeyed the 13th at Willow Creek. Had he shot better in the first round, nobody would be talking about him breaking into the top 10 for the first time on Saturday.

But Blair has put himself in position to have a chance on Sunday if other golfers falter. Since the Webcom Tour is a developmental tour arm of the PGA Tour, anything is possible.

So far, Andres Gonzales has been unstoppable at Willow Creek, and has further distanced himself from the rest of the field, leading his closest competitor Aaron Goldberg by four strokes going into Sunday’s final round.
