Back in June American Express launched a new project designed to enable, inspire and encourage people to pursue their passion projects. Using the hashtag #PassionProject, and through videos on YouTube, members of the #PassionProject are being profiled and the impact they are making no matter how big or small. Each feature is designed to motivate, educate and inspire people to pursue their own passion projects.
One such story that stands out is that of Yvonne Luong. As a self taught do it yourself type of girl, Yvonne, designs and makes dresses from scratch using unconventional materials. As a young designer, Yvonne made a dress that was direly needed for her sister to go to prom (that made her a sensation on Reddit and just made in five days!) and is now featured on YouTube where you can watch her story and get a crash course in DIY sketching, designing dresses and dyeing fabrics.
As a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology, Yvonne is already making some strong headway in the fashion community. She's already shown twice at NYFW and has won the Elle Magazine Fashion Next People's Choice Award.
Her style ethic revolves around her love of textile fabrics using the characteristics of the fabric to create garments that are not only strong but with added elements to make it unexpected. Yvonne's aesthetic seems to flow somewhere between architectural inspiration with a bit of old school Hollywood glam mixed in with harder constructed items but never straying from the softness that reflects who she is. Her biggest strengths are her unique hand dyeing technique and impeccable sewing skills that were apparent in her two collections on with Supima Cotton.
Currently the young designer is specializing in custom special occasion gowns and bridal gowns and is definitely a designer to keep an eye for in the future.
