NBC's Community has been spending more and more time off-campus in season four, and for yet another very special holiday episode, we will soon get to go home with yet another Greendale study group member: Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown)!
At the Paley Center for Media's PaleyFest event here in Los Angeles celebrating the comedy series, Brown admitted that she thought Shirley started the series as the most well-adjusted character. She had a family, she was simply going back to school. As time has gone on, she's gotten a little "weary" of the group, sometimes grumbling "that's why I don't hang out with you on the weekends" and the like. She wants to spend more time with her family-- especially now that it's intact again.
But it can't be denied that the Greendale study group is now an extended part of Shirley's family, so it should be no surprise that the resident baker (and now sandwich shop owner) has the gang over for Thanksgiving. But Brown wanted to warn fans of the show that though Shirley is very well put-together on campus, her house may be another story.
"Shirley likes really horrible wallpaper. I'm just saying that because you need to be warned. When it hits your eyes, you'll go 'Oh my God!'," Brown told LA TV Insider Examiner of "Cooperative Escapism in Familial Relations."
"Gingham and clouds and strange babies-- just babies floating. It's really weird."
But more importantly, getting a look at Shirley's family life in their own environment introduces us to her in-laws, which Brown previewed will "show us why she is the way she is. There's layers there. There's reasons!" According to Brown, Shirley has been shaped more by her in-laws these last few years than anything else.
We just have to hope the sexy voice wasn't developed as a response to the stress they cause!
Community airs on NBC on Thursday nights at 8 p.m. "Cooperative Escapism in Familial Relations" airs on March 7 2013. Be sure to check out our full PaleyFest video chat with Brown, where she also talks about potential graduation, success for Shirley's Sandwiches, and more!
