Social media has done a lot in changing the way people communicate and interact with each other; including dating, socializing and even job searching.  Job searching on social networks is quite unconventional but it makes perfect sense considering that employers use those same sites to conduct background checks on prospective candidates.  Why not use it to your advantage if you are a job seeker or an employer like YouTube CEO, Chad Hurley.  Upon discovering "YouTube Instant"  an interpretation of Google Instant created by Stanford University student Feross Aboukhadijeh Hurley was impressed and wasted no time offering him a position at the video uploading company via you guessed it; a social networking site- twitter in this case.   A surprised Aboukhadijeh asked "Is that a for-real job offer? ;)"   Hurley made it clear that it was and moved the conversation to direct message.

Moral of the story, social networking sites can be used for more that just wasting time at work and poking your friends.  They can be useful tools in business networking or in Aboukhadijeh's case creating applications that can get the attention of the entire blogosphere or even produce a job offer.

Job applicants will seeing a growing presence of use for social networking sites in their job search chores. Unfortunately, all users of these social networking sites and even popular blogs sites need to realize that prospective (and even current) employers will increasingly be also utilizing these sites for background info. I think social networking sites could do even more and offer the employee and employer the chance to set up a live video pre-interview. Sites like Chatroulette, Stickam, MatchVenue.com offer live video, but a site focused only on this would be welcomed.
