On Saturday, March 2, 2013, Evanston Township High School's track squad hosted an informal meet. Chicago Public School students were invited to compete. The young people devoted approximately five hours of their Saturday to a positive extracurricular activity that also supported the health and wellness concept the First Lady of the United States, Mrs. Michelle Obama, has been promoting for the past few years. Additionally, the teenagers participated in a positive form of mob action such as coming together to do relay races, hurdles, high jumps, and the 55, 200, 400, and 1600 meter dash, just to name a few. These young people were up and moving in a good way. They also showed great sportsmanship towards their peers, no matter how they placed in the race.
It's important to highlight these particular events because young people are feeding off the media coverage of their negative behaviors. For some reason they think it's glamorous or cool to see themselves fighting and creating chaos on video. However, on March 2, 2013, a select group of young folks were not planning to create havoc on the Magnificent Mile, Water Tower, Ford City Mall, nor North Riverside Mall. They were focused on being on the right track for health and wellness, possible scholarships, or to simply feed off the adrenaline that comes when the crowd is cheering for them. So, take a snap shot of about 125 students representing Evanston Township H.S., Whitney Young H.S., Harper H.S., and Gordon Tech as they make great strides on the right track.
