The City of Compton Department of Parks and Recreation in collaboration with the Compton 125 Project Committee held a Youth Games and Family Day event at Gonzales Park on Saturday. Activities included 3 on 3 basketball, 6 on 6 soccer, hula hoop, balloon toss, double dutch, 50 yard dash, sack race, music, sharing of upcoming community events, and swimming. Families also received free hot dogs, punch, and candy for their participation.

Each activity included the presentation of ribbons; awarded to 1st place, 2nd place, and 3rd place winners. Plus all events included “participation ribbons” for those who didn’t place in the events. Park staff even got involved in a couple of events.

The events also highlighted the athletic talents of our youth, who for some will even utilize their skills to obtain athletic scholarships for college/university admission in the future. But the games also allowed other youth the opportunity to have some fun, and learn the value of sportsmanship, and see caring adults take time to help them enjoy themselves.

Parks and Recreation used the day to also “kick off” their opening of the swimming pool(s) for the spring season. New pool staff has been hired to keep the expected increase of swimmers safe. And with the summer fast approaching all the public pools in the community will be much busier than usual.

The Compton 125 Project Committee has been partnering with the City since June of last year, helping the community celebrate Compton’s 125th Birthday. The Committee has sponsored or collaborated with other groups/organizations to put on monthly events to show unity, peace, and renewed strength and sense of pride in the City. And speaking on that note…..I was talking to a Compton Parks and Recreation staff person prior to writing this article. I wanted to get full names of all the staff that supported the event for the article. But I was encouraged to write “Parks and Recreation.” Now that speaks to Unity.

Congratulations to Compton’s Parks and Recreation Staff, and the Compton 125 Project Committee for a job well done. And much appreciation for the sponsors Cliff's Restaurant, El Torro Market, U-Can International, and Black Parent Union.
