Discouragement among our youth is an ongoing problem. Let me tell you a true story that will touch your heart.
Deanna, age 16, came home from school one day telling her family about an idea she had been pondering on for a while. An idea that doesn’t usually come from a teenager. She and a few friends approached their teacher asking her if they could start a program at school about Abstinence. It was nearing the close of the year, but the teacher thought it was a great idea and brought in other teachers who shared the same caring response. They called together a meeting before the principal. He loved the idea. The principal and teachers brought this idea before the board and superintendent. All agreed it would work great. She, with the help of friends, put out posters around the school and began inviting co-students. A few friends came to their meetings, but no large response. The year ended. Deanna was planning to continue this program the next year and had plans of various speakers. During summer, she scanned the internet and made copies of well known speakers, who had held seminars and even written books about the subject "Abstinence".
The next year of school began. Deanna noticed the school had a different principal. He had decided not to allow the Abstinence program to be taught in the school. Deanna felt like she was shot down. Yes, she became very discouraged, and at this low point in her life, she made a wrong choice. She began dating only one boy and lost her virginity.
Deanna doesn't believe in abortion, and will be having this precious baby. It won't be easy for her, but with the help of friends and family it's going to be okay.
If she had been given a chance with this Abstinence program,we know things would have been different for her. But we know God has a plan. We know there is a reason for this little baby that will be coming into the world.
I spoke with her recently. She admits she made a mistake and wanted to say to everyone, “If you've made a mistake, learn from it, don't make a 2nd mistake by continuing on the same road. Reach out to family and friends. If they are a true friend - they will be there for you.”
Our teens and preteens need much prayer. They need to be listened to. Yes, teens have something to say! God wants to work through our children.
So, it you are a parent - Please be open and listen. It could save you and your child many problems ahead. Remember - This is their first time to be a teenager. They need your guidance and need to know what you learned from your experience as a teen.
Two years have passed. Deanna is the best Mom in the world. Her little girl is so happy and is so loved by her family.
