Youth biathlon helps young cancer survivors show their mettle

Young cancer survivors, ages 7-12 (as well as their supporters, including siblings) will have the chance to compete in the first-ever LI YMCA Strength Through Strokes and Strides Youth Biathalon April 25, 2014 at the Great South Bay Y in Bayshore.

“So far about 22 kids have signed-up,” according to the organization’s health and wellness director Connie McDonaugh. “It’s truly touching to see the tremendous strength and dedication so many of these children have.”

The program, co-sponsored by Medals 4 Mettles, and Indianapolis non-profit, will give young athletes the chance to “pay it forward by awarding medals won to other kids who “demonstrate similar mettle, or courage, as they face life’s challenges.”

Kids up to 8-years old will be able to compete in a 100-yard swim as well as a ¾ mile run, while those 9-12 will compete in a 200-yard swim and a 1 mile run. The activities are meant to help children (including those recovering from chemotherapy) regain their confidence, as well as rebuild muscle as they try to get back to a “more normal” life.
