Your weekend workout: ride, run or blade the trail to St. Bonifacious

A newly paved Dakota Rail Regional Trail runs 13.5 miles from downtown Wayzata to St. Bonifacious. The pathway is flat, easy, perfectly shaded, and protected from the wind. The trail runs through wooded areas and waterways in Orono, Minnetonka Beach, Spring Park, Mound and Minnetrista. While hard core athletes won't find challenging hills or terrain on this path, it is a beautiful ride and a great opportunity to enjoy the outdoors while burning calories. It is also a great addition to our bike path system and is a welcome relief to those of us that ride the Cedar Lake Trail, the Greenway, and the "Minnetonka Blvd out to Wayzata" routes ad nauseum.

If you choose to drive to the trail head in Wayzata, you'll find parking near Boatworks and Northcoast restaurants (off of Lake street) in downtown Wayzata. There are parking spots reserved for Three Rivers Park district permit holders and plenty of parking for those without. The trail begins at the far end of the parking lot.

Along the trail to St. Boni's, pathway users will find several businesses which sell drinks, ice cream and other refreshments. At the end of the trail is the popular Bistro restaurant which feeds plenty of cyclists and other path users. Keep in mind however that the St. Boni Bistro is only open until 2pm and closed entirely on Mondays.

As always, the pathway is used by families with small children, dog walkers, and a variety of outdoor enthusiasts. For everyone's safety , it is always a good idea to use simple parkway courtesies such as signaling your pass and riding to the right side of the road.
