I often get asked what is the difference between many of the different massage styles, so I decided to write a description of some of the most common ones. These are general descriptions, and your massage therapist should always discuss with you the different massage styles that will best benefit you.
Pre Event Sports: Max of 20 minutes – this massage is not a typical relaxation massage. Its focus is to wake up the muscles for an intense workout. Most commonly used before marathons or other major events. Over 20 minutes will start relaxing the muscles. Great for an office chair massage add on.
Post Event Sports: This is a “non deep” tissue massage. It breaks up the scar tissue and lengthens out the muscles fibers that were bulked up during a workout. The focus of this massage is on stretching not a typical relaxation.
Swedish: This is a general term in the massage industry. Its focus is on circulation. Most therapists will integrate in other styles of massage into Swedish. Mostly used for relaxation.
Trigger Point/Deep Tissue/Neuromuscular: This is not recommended right after or before a workout. The focus is to release over contracted or used muscles “to get the knot out” This style can cause soreness the next day. Ice is advised to be used 20 minutes before bed and water as well.
Prenatal: used during or after pregnancy to reduce swelling of the feet and low back. Studies have shown to help relieve labor pains during the birthing process. Doctor approval is required. If there has been past problems with a pregnancy, massage is not advised.
Myofascial: This technique is used to assist in allowing the fascia (web of connective tissue) move freely. Stretching of the fascia in small increments throughout the body is completed in this session.
In home massage: Enjoy the comforts of your own home during and after your massage. For an additional fee we bring the relaxation to you.
Office chair massage: Corporate office settings but add some relaxation to your day. Chair massage is short in duration and you remain fully clothed. Additional fees apply but they worth it.
