We've all heard the expression, "to thine own self be true" and I, for one, am certain that many of us don't understand our true Self - with a capital "S". It's a shame because knowing your Self is the key to unlocking the doors of your dreams, your destiny and the ability to discover true love in life. Your true Self is created with intent, with eternal potential, immeasurable possibility and, most profoundly, everlasting life. There is no separating your Self from the Creator of all of this and the more time you take to discover the Creator the closer you come to your Self and to the Divine.
Our experience of ourselves means that our reference point is our own soul or spirit and not the material items that make up our experiences in this life. We discover the experience of ourselves when we self-reflect or meditate and take inventory of what's inside of our being. Self-reflection is opposite of materialism. Some experts call this "object-referral". In object-referral we are influenced by objects outside of the Self. These objects can include situations, circumstances, people and things. If we are in object-referral we are almost always in search of the approval of others and we act not on our own, but as a response to an anticipation of how we think others will respond to us. This is a fear-based approach. Object-referral causes us to feel a need to control things and gives us a strong need for external power.
Fear causes false needs in us: The need for approval, the need to control, the need to be liked, the need for power, the need to be right. These false needs are not truly of your true nature - your Self. When you are connected to your Self, there becomes no need to control or seek approval because fear is banished when operating from the true Self.
We all have an ego. The ego is not only your ability to sustain confidence and it is not who you really are. The ego is how you see yourself. The ego is the disguise you put on in social settings; it is the role you play. The social disguise flourishes on approval, strives to control and is nourished by power all because it dwells in fear.
Your true Self -- your soul -- is humble and feels superior to no one because it realizes that everyone else is created the same and has a true Self that uses different disguises.
Power-based world views are driven by the ego and the "power" they provide are temporary and fleeting. For example, if you think your title at work gives you "power" or if your wealth provides a sense of security, this power and security will last only as long as those things last. Permanent and real power and security come only from knowing your true Self.
Knowing your true Self provides for permanent power. Your true Self provides you the power to feel confident, humble, equal to others, able to contribute to your family and the world, and not afraid to be honest enough to take off your social disguise. Your true Self draws others to you and it likewise draws things you want to you. In a sense, becoming aware of and getting to know your true Self turns you into a "life magnet". It allows you to translate your desires into reality because it is based on the laws of nature as created by the Divine Creator.
This, my friends, is the beginning of living in a state of Grace. This is permanent power and is such that it creates a common connection between all of humanity and your power is that of connections -- connections that come from the love of Divine Creator and which is, ultimately, the definition of true love that we all seek.
