Your spring cleaning checklist and tips: outside

Outside

Washing Off the Dirt and Debris
Some pressure washers come with an assortment of spray tips. Each has a different spray pattern, from the high pressure pinpoint spray to a wider, low pressure spray. Siding can be cleaned with a low pressure spray tip. Pressure-washing is also useful for removing algae from siding and fences.

Cleaning the Deck
Pressure-wash your deck with a tip that produces a spray about the width of a 2x4, with medium pressure. The trick is to keep the spray moving. Don’t rest in one spot for too long or it could permanently damage the surface. After pressure-washing, you may need to apply a wood preservative to help prevent water damage and discoloration.

Spotless Driveway
Pressure-wash the driveway, then help prevent future stains by applying a waterproof sealer.

De-Junk the Gutters
Removing the debris isn’t only a fall chore in some yards; many trees drop litter in spring and summer. While you’re cleaning the gutters, also check for cracks in the seams.

Clean Patio Furniture
A few squirts of an all-purpose cleaner for plastic, wicker, wrought iron, aluminum, wood furniture, even vinyl cushions. Hose off everything (including the underside of each piece) to remove cobwebs, dirt, and leaves.

Be Grill Ready
Once a year you need to do a good clean on your grill. Grates are the exception to this general rule. They need to be cleaned completely after every use. This prevents food from sticking on your grill making it much easier to cook on. Use a heavy duty grill cleaner to remove burnt on soils. For stainless steel, you should clean the outside of your grill with a soft cloth and a good quality non-abrasive stainless steel cleaner.

Many of these spring cleaning tips were provided by Zep Commercial’s resident cleaning expert and director of marketing, John Callahan. The products that would most fit with those tips are as follows:

Zep Commercial Heavy Duty Foaming Degreaser -- for consumers looking for one degreaser to rule them all, this is it. It’s strong enough for bike and car grease, but safe enough for grills and ovens

Zep Commercial Garbage Odor Eliminator -- warmer weather can mean smelly outdoor trashcans that attract bugs and other unwanted creatures. Not only does this product eliminate odors, it also helps with insect control around the can and can soak up spills and leaks.

Zep Commercial Hardwood Floor Refinisher -- This product cleans and shines floors, covering more square feet than other commercial products.
