So this is mid-January and what have you done? Have you honored your resolutions? All of us hopefully have health-related plans for 2013. Why not check out Active.com (Active Local Events-San Diego Edition) and register for an event? Active.com has something for everybody. After you sign up, next is your training. Need tools to get out there and train while enjoying yourself? One suggestion: your smartphone. Just plug in!
Your smartphone is a great tool to help with motivation because you can use one of the many—often free—apps! A popular one such as MapMyRun is one that you can use wherever you are and it records your time, pace and distance (expect to get hooked on running once you try this app). If you can run (or walk) up to a mile, it will tell you how long it took you and thus motivate you to improve your time next time you do it again.
Also, while you are recording your run, you can listen to your favorite radio station on Pandora Radio; or if you’re a news junkie, listen to KPBS; bookworms can listen to audible books, too. I’m sure you can find something you like in one of the many apps out there. Find one you enjoy listening to and it will help you stay motivated, but most importantly, it will hook you into exercising—particularly, running.
Even the most experienced runners need motivation. Look around next time you step outside into the world of active people. When you see a runner, most likely he is plugged-in. Your smartphone provides you with a get-my-mind-off-this-workout and helps with boredom. Most importantly, it will help you get out and run more often. A half hour run (or jog-walk if you are out of shape) will fly-by with help from the genius smartphone.
Soon, your out-of-shape self will be a thing of the past and you will enjoy your time outside in the beautiful Chula Vista trails. You can enjoy running as well as your apps while honoring your health resolution for 2013.
