The Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine treats cancer patients. Its focus is on treating, educating, and supporting those diagnosed with diseases, whether common or rare cancers.

The Cancer Center describes itself as being an international leader in cancer treatment, research, prevention, education and community outreach. Their prevention program includes a web page that provides eight tips on how to stay healthy.

The page is worth a visit for those who would like to know more about the importance of regular exercise, smoking cessation, eating a healthy diet, consuming alcohol in moderation, protection from the sun, protection from sexually transmitted diseases, regular screening for a variety of cancers, blood pressure, cholesterol management, bone density, and maintaining a healthy weight.

The Centre lists smoking, lack of exercise, risky sexual behaviour, high saturated/trans fat consumption, low fibre consumption (low fruit, vegetable, grain), too much alcohol, high Body Mass Index (BMI), advanced age (65+), exposure to sunlight (lots or little), and family history as factors that may increase the chance of developing cancer.

Your Disease Risk is an interactive tool that allows visitors to assess their risk of developing cancer, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, and stroke. Your Disease Risk also provides prevention tips based on results. The web page is definitely worth a visit.

Cancer, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, and stroke are of concern in Canada. For healthy eating tips, visit Health Canada’s Food guide, a web site worth bookmarking. It is new and improved and provides valuable information for visitors of all ages.

Vegetarians are invited to visit the Vegetarian Food Guide. A New Food Guide Public Policy Statements provides more detailed information. Vegans are invited to visit the Vegan Food Guide.
