Your opinion will kill you

A Daily Word from the Word for Monday, March 3, 2014

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” – John 1:1-5

“That’s your opinion.” This seems to be a prevalent phrase and defense to the opposing views of people mired in the current controversies of the world. I know this saddens the heart of God. Opinions are what caused us to fall in the first place. Had Adam and Eve dismissed the devil’s opinion of God’s eternal truth, we would all still be in the garden today, enjoying unfettered and unhindered blissful fellowship with the Father and each other.

Opinions are deadly, my brothers and sisters, and we need to stop having them and stop engaging in the opinions of others. Opinions are what got us in this world of trouble in the first place. When folks ask me what my opinion is, I tell them that I don’t have one. When I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, my opinion (which was sinful, and created my need to be saved in the first place), was washed away and nullified by the Blood of Jesus. I gladly surrendered my opinion, which was a lie, for the Truth of God’s Word.

I don’t have an opinion on gay marriage, abortion, and every other lifestyle or hindrance that is destructive and not God’s best for us; because again, I surrendered my faulty opinion for the Truth of God’s Eternal, Immutable, Unbreakable, and Incorruptible Word (Isaiah 40:8, Romans 1:23, Hebrews 6:17-18). We should be concerned about one thing: conducting our lives according to what God has to say on these matters, which is the only truth that matters. We mess up when we try to cut God’s Word with our fallen opinion, when we should do the opposite: cutting our opinion with the Word of God! 2 Timothy 2:15 testifies of the truth, as it declares “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

God did not create the universe, or us, from opinion. He created everything from the truth of His Word. Could you imagine if when God was giving Moses His Ten Commandments (and they are called “the Ten Commandments,” and not “the ten opinions”), Moses said back “Well, that’s your opinion, Lord.” It’s absurd! Let’s, for a moment, imagine such a preposterous exchange:

God, the Creator of the Universe: “Thou shall have no other god’s before Me.”

Moses: “That’s your opinion, God.”

God, the Creator the Universe: “Thou shall not kill.”

Moses: “That’s your opinion, God.”

God, the Creator the Universe: “Thou shall not commit adultery.”

Moses: “That’s your opinion, God.”

God, the Creator the Universe: “Thou shall not steal.”

Moses: “That’s your opinion, God.”

It’s ridiculous! And it’s deadly.

God wants all of His human creation to become His children, so He can give us His best. What good parent wouldn’t want their child to have their best? When we walk in any other way other than the Father’s Way, then we are not getting His best. Don’t believe me? Just ask the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32). Or better yet, how is your opinion working out for you, my brother? How is your “strong belief” building you up, my sister?

Any marriage, union, lifestyle, mentality, attitude, action, or thought that is contrary to what God has created is killing, stealing, and committing adultery. When we engage in these ungodly practices, we are cheating on God, and we have committed murder and theft in our hearts by disregarding and being willfully disobedient to His Word, which is His Truth, His Character, and His very Essence.

I am not being harsh, because I have been there. And do you want to know something? After walking in God’s best, I never want to go back to that destructive, deceptive, filthy lifestyle again; and I want you to come out of it! I refuse to be that dog returning to its vomit! (Proverbs 26:11). And that is what sin is, it is vomit. It will make you sick. Anything and any lifestyle that is contrary to God is a cesspool of vomit. My days of eating vomit are over, family! And I want them to be over for you too!

God, in His great Love for us, is trying to rescue His Creation by extending His Mighty Hand of Mercy to pull us out of His judgment. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:12-13).

When we are standing before the Almighty God, Himself, our opinion won’t save us; in truth, if our opinion of God’s Word is anything other than having received His Son as our personal Lord and Savior, and accepted the sinless and spotless Blood of the Lamb as payment of our sins; our opinion will send us straight to hell. And sadly, those opinionated folks will have all of eternity to discuss their opinions with themselves and each other while in eternal torment, eternal darkness, and forever separated from the Father. I pray this not be you.

Make no excuses for sin, my brothers and sisters. Sin is the reason why the Savior had to die a brutal and barbaric death. Sin is deadly—literally. Making excuses for sin is even more deadly, because it allows the spirit of deception to operate in your life. Jesus died for sinners. If you are struggling in an area of sin, then that is what the Blood of Jesus is for; this is when you can call upon God's mercy and grace to cover you. But when you make excuses for sin, and refuse to acknowledge it, then there remains no sacrifice, no Blood, no mercy, and no grace (Hebrews 10:26).

And that, my brothers and sisters, is the most deadly. We all struggle with certain things and certain areas in our lives. It is in these places that we look to the Savior and trust Him to continue to work these things out in us, by His mercy and grace, which draws us in. To make excuses for sin or to twist God's Word to fit and justify a sinful lifestyle is to call Jesus a liar. It is the goodness of God that leads to repentance (Romans 2:4). There is always a provision for the acknowledgement of our sin; however, there remains no provision for those who justify sin.

Are you ready to receive God’s best, my brother? Are you at a place to drop that attitude, my sister? Then great! Let’s go! And leave your opinion at the door; because it isn’t wanted or welcomed where you are going.

Father, thank You for Your Word, which is the only Truth that matters. Most Holy God, help us to lay aside and lay down our opinions, and to turn and walk in your Truth always. We stand with You on what You have declared concerning every matter. We come into agreement with You concerning righteous and health living, and every issue of life. In Jesus Name, we thank You that we now walk in Your Truth, which has made us free! (Galatians 5:1). Amen and Amen!

Take action! Challenge your thinking! Choose to adopt God’s truth concerning marriage, abortion, lifestyle, mentalities, attitudes, and every other area of your life. Choose to allow God’s Holy Spirit to convict you of His Eternal and Immovable Truth. And continue to fight the good fight of always walking in and conducting yourself in the Ways of the Father; for God, your Eternal and Perfect Way, has already given you the victory!

If you have never received Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, I encourage you to do it today, right now, by saying this prayer out loud: “Jesus, forgive me for my sins. I am sorry. I truly desire to be saved and reconciled back to God, my Father, through You. I receive Your sinless Blood as payment in full for my sins—past, present, and future. I now call You my Lord and Savior, and invite You to live within my heart, and to permanently live within me. I make You Lord over me and over my life from this moment on. Amen.” Congratulations! You are now a child of God, made whole and made new, by the Blood of Jesus Christ!
