“A man’s gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men.” – Proverbs 18:16
Many people have risen to a place only to experience a short stay before they fall away. Numerous individuals have these wonderful gifts, which open doors of opportunity and pave the way, but sadly do not possess the character to keep them in that way.
You can have the most amazing gift, but if you have not, or would not, allow God to work and perfect your character, it will be a short trip for you. Your character is what keeps you in a place. And we must allow God to build our character so we can stay on the road which He has prepared for us.
Have you been wondering why God hasn’t launched you yet, my brother? Can’t figure out why God isn’t using you in greater ways, my sister? Then maybe you need to allow God to perform a character check. Perhaps you should be thanking your Most Perfect and Holy Father for His mercy in keeping you where you are at, because He knows what is required of you—and at this point, you would shipwreck if He was to release you. I can say these things to you because I speak from experience!
Be grateful that God is containing you, so that He can mold you in His Image and burn everything out of you that the devil would love to grab hold of, manipulate, and use against you to cause you to fall from grace. Be grateful for that containment, family! Thank God for keeping you in His consuming fire of protection! That same fire that burns everything out of you that is not like Him or of Him, so that when your Daddy does launch you, even the devil will run the other way! Do not despise the containment, because it is where your character is built and perfected. Your level of willingness determines your length of stay in God’s oven of character refinement, and the temperature. Oh, my brothers and sisters, God is good—all the time!
The Hebrew word for “room” as used in this verse is rachab (pr. raw-khab) and means “to broaden, make room, open wide” (Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance). We confess, decree, and declare God’s Word found in Deuteronomy 28:2, for the Lord’s blessings to come upon us and overtake us; yet God knows that if He did, in our current state, that these blessings would become a curse to us. So let Him work on your character, so you can enjoy every blessing of the Father, which will make you rich and add no sorrow to them! (Proverbs 10:22).
Matthew 22:14 paves the way as it proclaims “For many are called, but few are chosen.” God has equipped every one of us with gifts and talents to be used for the advancement of His kingdom, and for His glory. The Great Commander has put forth a call to all of us. Once we respond to the call, then we must allow Him to put us through His Divine Boot Camp, so He can then vet us, prepare us, equip us, and choose us. The problem is that most folks respond to the call, but they don’t want to go to boot camp; thus are never tested and approved (2 Timothy 2:15). If God cannot allow you to be tested, then He most certainly cannot equip you and approve you. In short, He can’t use you.
Yes, God’s boot camp is painful. But it is necessary, lovely, fruit-bearing, and you come out with a beautiful character! I wouldn’t have it any other way. When God chooses you, because you allow Him to do that necessary work in you (I am talking about a deep work, not that superficial surface stuff), then He gives you sustainable, titanium character that you cannot put a price tag on!
Sadly, I have seen too many people (and many of them are in leadership and pastoral roles) who have chosen themselves rather than submitting to the Potter’s wheel and kiln (oven). And they are a hot mess. These folks do so much damage, and certainly are not working for God’s kingdom; but rather working to build their own kingdom for their own glory. I pray this not be you or me!
Do you want to be an authentic force to be reckoned with, my brother? Would you like to shine with a captivating love for all the world to see, my sister? Then allow the One Who created you and knows you best to do that necessary work in you, so that He can then place you and promote you. Trust your Heavenly Father. He knows what He is doing.
Father, thank You for not allowing us to miss it. We call upon You, Most Holy Father, to do that work in us which You desire to do for our good and Your Glory. Help us to trust and submit ourselves to You in deeper and more intimate ways. We say “Have your Way in us and in our lives, Lord,” and we mean it this time! In Jesus Name, we thank You that we were created in Your Image, and it is Your Image that You bring forth in us. Amen and Amen.
Take action! Challenge your thinking! Choose to get off of the world’s wheel and allow God to put you on His Potter’s Wheel. Seek the Lord’s Will each and every hour of each and every day. Choose to submit to your Savior’s nail-scarred hand. And continue to fight the good fight of not fighting your Father; for God, your Master Craftsman, has already given you the victory!
If you have never received Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, I encourage you to do it today, right now, by saying this prayer out loud: “Jesus, forgive me for my sins. I am sorry. I truly desire to be saved and reconciled back to God, my Father, through You. I receive Your sinless Blood as payment in full for my sins—past, present, and future. I now call You my Lord and Savior, and invite You to live within my heart, and to permanently live within me. I make You Lord over me and over my life from this moment on. Amen.” Congratulations! You are now a child of God, made whole and made new, by the Blood of Jesus Christ!
