Your definitive guide to SXSW

See also

South by Southwest (herein referred to as SXSW) is a set of film, interactive, and music festivals and conferences that takes place every spring in Austin.

People from the around the country are going to be flocking to the site to hear some great tunes, see movie screenings, and attend the conferences for the up-to-date info about the industry.

So rather than bore you with semantics and pile on the usual wordy text about origins, and importance of these kinds of festivals, here's your guide, inside and out, of SXSW.

  • Date: March 7 - 16, 2014 in Austin, TX, USA.
  • Music Showcases:

Naturally, this is how we kick it off. The showcases begin on March 11, and don't end until the very last day on March 16. We were going to give you the full schedule, which you can look at by clicking the hyperlink, but there are literally too many names to list on one article.

Some of our favorites so far announced are Coldplay, Imagine Dragons, London Grammar, The Mowgli's, CYMBALS, Against Me!, SKATERS, Foster The People, and Paper Lions.

The showcases will run well into the early morning, and are definitely worth checking out if you're headed that way. With so much going on everyday, it would be absolutely impossible to see it all, so check out the full schedule, and plan your navigation.

  • Speakers (Music and Film):

Music first. On Tuesday, March 11, Craig Aaron is coming to hold a panel at Austin Convention Center, Ballroom E, to talk about Net Neutrality, Fred Armisen will be in Room 18ABCD (of the same building) at 3:30 P.M. for Portlandia: Behind The Scenes With The Creators, and Eli Ball will be at Hilton Austin, Downtown, Salon A at 11:00 A.M. for It Takes Money To Make Money: Alternative Funding, again, just to give you a brief overlook of the variety of panels that will be held (and that's just the first day!).

  • Screenings:

Take Care premieres at SXSW on March 7, at Stateside Theater, 6:45 - 8:18 P.M. and is summarized as a comedy about a woman (Leslie Bibb), who returns home from the hospital after getting hit by a car, only to realize no one wants to take care of her. Always a winner for originality.

Things People Do will be at the AMC Theater at VCC 6:30-8:20 P.M. about a man, Bill Scanlin, who loses his job and, unable to tell his wife Susan for fear of losing his family, embarks on a life of crime, befriending a detective, Frank, who has chosen to uphold the law for a living but believes very little in its value. Compelling story? Boring narrative? We'll find out!

Finally from our grab bag of flicks to showcase, May The Best Man Win, our personal favorite thus far, just from the description.
From SXSW.com: Whit and Drew, film raunchy pranks and stick them online. To try and attract more views they recruit a girl, Rosa, to appear in their videos. They BOTH fall for her and begin a series of insanely embarrassing and outrageous head to head challenges to try and impress her.

There you have it! Make sure you check out the website for a full schedule as there is literally too many to name in one sitting. We hope you enjoy your SXSW, and we'll keep you up to date on the latest and greatest events coming right at you as we inch closer to that warm weather of Spring into Summer.
