Your body language shapes who you are Amy Cuddy on Ted

Your nonverbal body language governs how others see and may also change how we see ourselves. Psychologist Amy Cuddy says how you stand and position your body can affect the chemicals in your body, and even the cortisol your brain releases. This is important and could make a very big difference in your life situations.

Body posturing affects your hormones

There is a lot of difference between powerful and powerless people. High power people have high testosterone levels and lower cortisol. Lower cortisol levels mean the high power person can handle stress better. A person who is in charge in business or in some other endeavor is best in this level, because they can handle all situations straight across the board without over reacting. Your nonverbal body position and how you carry yourself can make a world of difference, in meaningful ways in what our bodies release, and how we react. See the video for study evaluations and body power and unempowering positions.

It’s not about the content of your speech

It’s about your presence is driving it. You nonverbal body positioning is you standing in your truth. You bring the ideas about yourself in your body. “Fake it till you make it.” But nobody wants to fake it till you get there and then feel like you don’t belong, like an imposter. Do it even if you are paralyzed. You have to participate or you are going to fail. You can make yourself powerful, you are supposed to be here. You can tell just by looking at someone if they feel unempowered.

“Fake it until you become it”

Tiny tweaks make a difference between having power as opposed to being someone who is unempowered. Configure your brain to get your testosterone up and your cortisol levels down. Don’t leave the situation feeling like you didn’t hand out your power and change the outcome of your life.
