Brother versus Brother, Quest for Six, Caepernicking, The return to the Glory Days after an 18-year absence; These are all themes that’ll converge on this year’s Super Bowl as the 49ers return to the stage they used to dominate in the 80s and early 90s. It’s probably not necessary to bother mentioning where and when to watch them since whatever party or bar you attend will have it on.
But believe it or not, there are other sports events to watch this weekend. If the 49ers win, they’ll join the Giants in bringing a championship trophy back to SF. Might there be additional squads on tap that could join them? Let’s take a look.
The Warriors may not be ready to hoist an NBA championship banner, but they look to be playoff-bound. They follow up a three-game winning streak by hosting the Suns Saturday night.
Meanwhile, the Sharks, who normally make the playoffs but never get to the Stanley Cup Finals, are undefeated. They’ll try to keep the streak going as they host the Predators, same time as the W’s.
Quite frankly, most of our local college hoops teams are mediocre this year, but the St. Mary’s men are on a roll as they host last-place Portland Saturday afternoon. And the always-nationally-ranked Stanford women are at Oregon State on Sunday, in a matchup that will overlap the start of the Super Bowl.
Maybe they’ll put the Beavers away so early that you can flip over to the 49ers with impunity.
