Younger Next Year by Chris Crowley & Henry S Lodge M.D.

The time is now to start feeling younger
The time is now to start feeling younger

The full title of this book is Younger Next Year - Live Strong, Fit and Sexy - Until You're 80 and Beyond. and according to the authors if you do everything their book tells you to do that may actually happen.

This is book is a call to action for all those who Crowley says, one day opened their eyes and realized,"I am almost sixty," or fifty, or fifty five and look at the shape I'm in. Of course this book is also a good read for those who don't want to spend the later half of life trying to repair all the damage done to the body during the early years of life. Exercise is a habit the book intimates which should be started early in life but if in the past you spent your days over indulging, then as soon as possible so through the power of exercise your age can be, "functionally younger every year," and the second half of your life can be healthier than the first half.

The exercise regiment in the book is based on Dr. Henry Lodge's 7 principles, referred to in each chapter as "Harry's Rules": The list of rules is also printed in the appendix of the book.

  1. Exercise 6 days a week for the rest of your life.
  2. Do serious aerobic exercise 4 days a week for the rest of your life.
  3. Do serious strength training, with weights, 2 days a week for the rest of your life.
  4. Spend less than you make.
  5. Quit eating crap!
  6. Care for yourself and for others
  7. Connect and commit to a program which best suits you. One which you will not give up on.\

Crowley says there is, "No negotiations. No give. No excuses.," for not sticking to these rules for the rest of your life especially rule number one which he proclaims must be done, "until you die."

A word of warning to the reader this book is not a step by step program which you can plug into your life. Younger Next Year is instead a book about what to do and the specifics of why it must be done. The authors leave it up to you to seek out a good gym and trainer in order to put into motion (no pun intended) the specifics of the book.

There is so much in the book it might be a good idea to take out a notebook and take notes or better yet put down the book and get moving. As one person who read the book said , "I would probably have been in better shape this year if I had not just read the book, but listened to the advice and better yet done the advice."

Read the book and listen to the advice you'll thank yourself later.
