Young Rembrandts: Princesses and wizards create magical art (Photos)

Young Rembrandts of North Dallas (YR) knows all about art summer camp fun and the joys of being a child. Two special North Dallas camps recently celebrated the art of being princesses and wizards. Glitter glue, pastels, Sharpies, magic markers charmed the campers as they created beautiful works of art.

The YR Princess Camp included drawing Cinderella, princesses, ball gowns and daywear plus creating the perfect slippers. The magical glitter potion was very popular. Sparkling jewelry and their eye-catching drawings came alive. Long tresses were the style of the week along with the dresses made from yards of fabric resembling Grimm’s Fairy Tales illustrations. The princess campers learned how to draw faces especially eyes. One six-year-old camper thought her princess had evil eyes. She changed them to happy ones and left the wicked stepsister drawing behind.

The YR Enchanted Academy Workshop created mythical creatures like lovable three-headed cats, talking trees and charming wizard outfits and digs. The wizards bought many fun things to camp and the Young Rembrandts’ professor, Suzanne McCord, brought a blue and gold robe and hat she created for her son years ago (probably with her magic wand.)

The magic years of childhood wonder are special.
Billy Collins, Poet Laureate of the United States from 2001-2003, wrote a beautiful poem entitled On Turning Ten. Below is part of his work.

“At four I was an Arabian wizard.

I could make myself invisible

by drinking a glass of milk a certain way.

At seven I was a soldier, at nine a prince….

It seems only yesterday I used to believe

there was nothing under my skin but light.

If you cut me I could shine.

But now when I fall upon the sidewalks of life,

I skin my knees….” --Billy Collins

Santa Claus, The Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny and Fairy Godmothers are fleeting.
Young Rembrandts captures the fun and spirit of childhood and lets imaginations soar. Their website has information about art classes and programs in North Dallas, Plano, Murphy, Garland, Richardson and Wylie to name a few cities. They also have after school classes during the school year.
