Athena was marked to be euthanized at the Wichita Animal Shelter. She was showing aggression towards other dogs. But a volunteer at K-9 Karma Animal Advocates saw something in this handsome Pit Bull girl and she was pulled by the rescue.
As it turns out, Athena has a cracked canine tooth and the other one is broken off below the gum line. While they don't know how long Athena has suffered with the pain in her mouth, her gums are very infected which indicates her teeth have been bad for some time.
"She loves people and kids, and I think her dog aggression issues will settle down once she has the dental surgery," said her soon to be foster mom, Jessica Sherwood. "Both of her upper canines are gone, and when we get her sedated, we'll know how many teeth will need to go."
Currently, Athena is at boarding with the veterinarian as her surgery is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 28 to remove the damaged teeth. In addition, she will need several rounds of antibiotics to address the infection in her gums. At somewhere between three and four years old, Athena has likely had several litters of puppies. But her life as a "breeder" has changed dramatically with her rescue.
K-9 Karma is taking care of her immediate medical need, and when she is healed from the dental surgery, she will be spayed and be looking for her forever home. Sherwood has Pit Bulls and has fostered countless more to help them find a good home.
Despite a successful fund raiser last weekend, K-9 Karma has taken in several dogs that needed more extensive medical care . The cost of Athena's dental surgery will be around $500 and the rescue is asking for donations to help with the vet bill. Please help if you can and share. The area rescues depend solely on contributions from the public to be able to rescue dogs that otherwise would not have a chance.
