Photo by Daniel Oines via Flickr reported that a 4 year old girl in Logan County was hospitalized Wednesday evening after her mother's boyfriend had a bad day at work. He wanted to sleep and the young girl would not stop crying, so the mother told her daughter to go outside to play. Unfortunately, that is the moment that Jonathan Goodman chose to attack.

He picked up the little girl by her hair and threw her across the room. He choked her. He punched her. When her mother tried to stop him, he threatened to kill them. The violence continued until the mother was able to get herself and her daughter out of the house. Fortunately, the little girl has been released from the hospital, though the emotional scars will remain for years.

She was lucky to survive. Other children are not. Domestic violence and child abuse affect many families across the world and in our own state. There is help available. If you or someone you know is experiencing violence in the home, please contact one of the resources at the end of the article and get help.

Remember that the key to prevention is education. There are numerous parenting classes that help caregivers learn how to interact with their children in healthy ways. Additionally, it is important for parents to take time for self-care. You cannot adequately care for another unless your own needs are met. If you need help, please speak up.

For domestic violence, you can contact the Oklahoma Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assualt (OCADVSA) or the Oklahoma City YWCA.

For child abuse, you can contact Child Protective Services or the Center on Child Abuse and Neglect.

Help is out there. Please reach out before it is too late.
